Germiston Golf Club

Our first game for 2012 was played on Sunday at Germiston. After play was suspended for about 1 hour due to an afternoon thunder storm, most players resumed and complete the round. That is indicative of the competitiveness and spirit in which the battles are fought for the Golfers Club sponsored Monthly Mug.

Thanks to Jason Rowe and the Golfers Club for the ongoing sponsorship of our Monthly Mug.

Thanks to Darren and the Germiston team for hosting us. The team must also be complimented for the constant improvements on the golf course and the clubhouse.

The 2012 Inter Provincial will be played at Cotswold Downs and Durban Country Club on 28 & 29 April. Please take note that this is a Long Weekend (Friday and Monday holidays) – will be playing Saturday and Sunday Cotswold & DCC.

Tournament Costs and accommodation arrangements will be circulated shortly. The team will be restricted to 12 or 16 players. Anybody that is interested and available for selection to please confirm with me.

Handicaps:
From 1 February 2012, the following Handicap Calculation will be applied:

Section 5.2 of the handicap manual will with effect from the 1st February 2012 read as follows:
“5.2 Adjusted Gross
For handicap purposes only an Adjusted Gross may be submitted to the SAGA Handicap System. An
Adjusted Gross is obtained by applying the following rules to the maximum score achieved on each
hole:

Handicap       Limitation on hole scores
+6 to 18         Limit of 2 over par on any hole
19 and over    Limit of three over par on any hole.

Where a player is unsure of how to adjust the gross on each hole, the player may enter the scores
achieved on each hole using the SAGA Handicap Terminal function “Hole by Hole” score, which will
perform the Adjusted Gross for the player.”

2. Handicap adjustments

With effect from 1 January 2012, there will be no limit on how many strokes a golfers handicap may
move up or down, provided the club handicapper reviews and approves changes where handicaps
increase by more than two shots at the month end recalculation. This follows the USGA system,
where they also use an average of the 10 best scores of the last 20. The fact that the handicap is
already an average of the best scores means it is unnecessary to further restrict the monthly
movements. The system cannot control those players who wish to manipulate their handicaps – that
is the job of the club handicapper and fellow players.

The relevant section of the handicap manual will read as follows:

“9.3 Handicap Increases and Decreases
9.3.1 Standard System Applies
Subject to Section 9.2.4 and 9.2.5 below, a handicap shall be changed only as warranted by
the standard computation system in this booklet. There is no limit on the number of strokes a
handicap can increase or decrease, although handicaps may only increase after month end.
The club handicapper must approve changes where handicaps increase by more than two
shots after the month end calculation.

Temporary suspension of the Calculated Rating (CR)

The above changes to the maximum score allowed on a hole, which will be implemented from the
1st February 2012, will have the effect of bringing the scoring records of all handicap divisions into
line. This will however also affect the scoring statistics of each handicap division, with a larger effect
on the lower handicap divisions. The CR algorithms used for competition score adjustments
internationally, are based on a variance, due to weather or course set up, outside a buffer zone,
from the normal scoring patterns of each handicap division. The CR calculation will therefore be
suspended until the scores in each handicap division have stabilised to provide a statistically.

We crossed the Jukskei River this past weekend and visited Blue Bull Country at the very sociable Services Golf Club. The fact that spring treatment was done earlier in the week didn’t stop the guys from posting decent scores. Good day everyone

INTER PROVINCIAL
We had great pleasure in hosting the 2011 Tanglewood Inter Provincial this past weekend. As it is with all tournaments of such nature, new friendships are made and old friendships cemented.

The tournament was played over two days at Ebotse and Germiston and our sincere gratitude must be extended to the staff at both venues for the condition of the courses and sharing their facilities with us – Thanks Charlie (Ebotse) and Darren (Germiston), your assistance is much appreciated.

Special thanks must go to Stuart at Germiston for putting together a fantastic dinner on Saturday evening and keeping the Bar open until “half past”.

To the KZN members that made the trip – thanks gents, we enjoyed entertaining you guys for a couple of days (not quite sure who entertained who) and I am sure this have set the wheels in motion for a “revenge” tournament in the not so distance future.

As for the Gauteng team, well done guys, although we were given a little skrik after Friday’s round. Congratulations on winning the Inter Provincial Shield – it’s been a while!!

Last but certainly not least, thanks to our sponsors for this event, Lee Ramsden (CCCC) and Warren Mitchell (Brand in Hand) provided all the prizes for the event and Mercedes Benz Bedfordiew provided us with transportation.

Good day everyone

Thanks to everybody that participated in this past weekend’s Nationals at San Lameer and Wild Coast. It was a pity that the weather didn’t play along with both courses being closed for play on Friday. The tournament was reduced to one round with everybody playing at San Lameer on Saturday. Congratulations to the winners and especially the following Gauteng members – Wynand Botha (3rd in B Division), Brent Marlton (2nd in C Division) and Michael Vorster (Nearest to Pin).

2. register your SA Player ID and PIN on the Handicaps Network Africa (HNA) website www.handicaps.co.za as soon as you receive your card. You can also access this site via a link on our website, www.tanglewoodgp.co.za  The instructions will appear on the pamphlet attached to your card.   
3. Your username and PIN number allows you to manually input your score on any SAGA handicap terminal or the www.handicaps.co.za website so no excuses for not entering scores!  Please note that your username is your SA Player ID number and not your name.  

Please treat your card as you would your credit card thus keeping it in a safe place and do not place it against anything magnetic as the cost of replacing it is R120.00.

6)         MATCH PLAY
The first round matches for the 2011 Match Play Championships will be played on Sunday 2 July at Germiston.  There will be no additional charge for entry into the Match Play.

7)         ECLECTIC
            We will be starting the 2011 Eclectic on June 19 at Benoni Country Club and will be played over the remainder of the year. The eclectic will be formatted using 1 hole per course with a total of 18 holes. We will be “creating” an 18 hole course using holes from different courses totalling a par 72 course with 4 par 3’s, 4 par 5’s and 10 par 4’s. As this will be a stableford based competition, strokes 1 to 18 will be used from the various courses.
With 23 games remaining, one course per month has been excluded from the eclectic, leaving us with 18.
Entry for the Eclectic will be R100-00 per player, payable in advance.

Thanks for the tremendous feedback and response received regarding the Match Play tournament which we want to start this coming weekend.

Due to the fact that this was rather short notice and a lot of our regular players have already made other arrangements for this weekend being so close to Nationals, the committee will evaluate the situation and communicate the outcome to all members by Wednesday. Worst case scenario will be the postponement of 1st round matches to July.

1. Eclectic

We will also be launching the 2011 eclectic with somewhat of a difference. The competition will start on 19 June 2011 at Benoni Country Club and end at Germiston on 4 December 2011 with the winner being announced at Ebotse on 11 December 2011. The competition will consist of 23 games and we will be nominating TWO holes per game that will be counting towards the competition (total of 46 holes). 3)      2011 KNOCK-OUT
The 2011 Knock-Out will start at our next Monthly Mug which will be played on 5 June 2011 at Germiston with the finals taking place on 4 December 2011.

3.1        Knock-Out Rules
We only have SIX months to conclude the Match Play and therefore stricter rules will be applied.

There will be NO additional charge for entries and we are inviting all members to enter and participate in this tournament.

3.1.1     The tournament will be played in a Match Play format with the lower handicap going down to scratch and shots given on the balance of holes.

3.1.2     All games to be played at Germiston on the Mug days with NO exceptions.

3.1.3     Games interrupted by inclement weather or bad light will be determined by comparing scorecards and the result of the game will be based upon the status of the match after 9 holes, then the last six, last three and last hole.

3.1.4     Once a player has entered the Match Play and can’t make it to a game, the match will be forfeited.

3.1.5     Closing date for entries will be on Sunday 22 May 2011.

Spouses are welcome to attend the prize-giving dinner at a cost of R130.00pp. Please advise whether your spouse will be attending for catering purposes.

NEWS UPDATE

1)  MONTHLY MUG AND CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
For your convenience, the Time Sheets for the April Monthly Mug and Club Championships have been attached.

Entries for the Monthly Mug will be closing at 18h00 on Thursday 31 March and the Club Championship entries will be closing at 18h00 on Wednesday 6 April.

If your name appears on any of the Time Sheets and you can no longer play, please notify me accordingly otherwise you will be held liable for the green fees.

Tournament Rules for the Club Championships will be circulated closer to the time.

2)  NEXT GAMES

17 April 2011 – ERPM – I have booked for 8 x 4balls from 07h45 as ERPM has already played there Club Championships. The cost will be R200-00 for Members and R220-00 for Visitors (Sponsor and format to be announced).

After this we will all be enjoying two long weekends in a row and the next game will be the Monthly Mug at Germiston on 8 May 2011 where after our calendars should be back to normal.

3) ANNUAL SUBS
This is just a last minute reminder that 2011 subs are due with tomorrow (31 March 2011 being the deadline to prevent being “Hot Carded” and interest charged. Those who are paying tomorrow, please ensure that Payment Confirmations are being forwarded to Tibby.

4) WEBSITE
Our websitewww.tanglewoodgp.co.za has been “revamped” and will be updated on a weekly basis. I am furthermore requesting all our members who are sponsoring our events to please forward the company logos and website addresses for inclusion on the site.

There are still a couple of small issues to be addressed and rectified on the site and I will appreciate any suggestions or comments from our members.

5) ADMINISTRATION
As you might all be aware that I have taken over the administrative duties of Tanglewood Gauteng and want to urge all our members to come forward with suggestions and ideas to improve and grow our wonderful golf club.

I also want to take the opportunity to thank Nikola for all the hard work and effort that she has put into Tanglewood over the past three years and wish her well on her future endeavors.

Good afternoon Tanglewood Members,

Unfortunately our game scheduled to be played at Silver Lakes Golf Estate was rained out on Sunday.  Hopefully this is the last of the strange rainy weather so that we have good conditions for our Golfers Club Monthly Mug this weekend and more importantly our Club Championships being held at Germiston Golf Club on the 09th & 10th April.

Fond Farewell
This weekend saw the end of my duties as the Tanglewood Administrator in Gauteng. I have decided to step down as Administrator so that I can focus more on my family and my career.

I would like to thank Tibby and Colin for their continued support and friendship.  Tanglewood Golf Club has been part of my life for almost 10 years.  First, as a beginner golfer and member, then as a committee member in KZN and Gauteng, and finally as administrator of Gauteng.  I have learnt a lot from the experience and have grown as an individual.
To all the members that have served on the Tanglewood Gauteng Committee over the years.  It has been a pleasure working with each of you.  Thank you for all you assistance and support over the years.  A special thanks to Brent Marlton, Tshepo Dhlamini, Hennie Vermaak and Julian Burch – the current committee for their support over the last 3 months.
To the Captain – Lee Ramsden, thank you for always been there at the “head of the pack” leading Tanglewood, the committee and its’ members. 

Lastly – and most of all I would like to thank all the Tanglewood members and Friends that I have met over the years.

A huge thank you to Virgin Mobile and Steve Bailey for sponsoring our game at Services Golf Club on Sunday.
